Q: Are your firefighters required to be residents of Moore?

A: No

Q: Is it possible to become a firefighter without my EMT license?

A: An EMT license is not required to apply. But, candidates that do not possess an EMT license will be required to attend and pass EMT class, pass the registry exam and become a Nationally Registered EMT within the first year in order to maintain employment. The Moore Fire Department will pay the related expenses and provide time off when needed for those needing EMT.

Q: Is it possible to become a firefighter without my Firefighter I certificate?

A: Yes, it is possible. Firefighter I and II are taught in the recruit academy.

Q: What are the medical standards for entrance into the pension system?

Q: How long is the hiring process for Firefighter?

A: The hiring process for recruit firefighter takes about 4 months.

Q: Are there any alternate testing dates for applicants?

A:  No. Unfortunately, we are unable to schedule additional dates. The hiring process schedule details the available testing dates.  

Q: What steps are in the hiring process?

A: The first step of applying is to complete the Join Our Team Applicant Questionnaire once the hiring period begins. The following steps in the hiring process are shown below.

  • Physical Agility Test, requirements are as follows:
    • 1.5 mile run within 13 minutes
    • 35 sit ups within 2 minutes
    • 7 pull-ups, without release (palms away, full extension, chin over the bar)
    • 20 ft. balance beam while carrying a 20lb. hose
    • 125 lb. dummy carry completely off the ground (50 ft. away and back)
    • Lumbar test using 15 lb. weight

Q: Is there a study guide for the written examination?

Q: What should I wear to the physical agility test?

A: Comfortable athletic clothing is recommended. Do consider your footwear as excessively cushioned running shoes can make the balance beam difficult to successfully complete. 

Q: How long does the Moore Fire Department Recruit Academy last?

A: The Moore Fire Department Recruit Academy lasts approximately 14 weeks.

Q: Where do I attend the Recruit Academy?

A: The Moore Fire Department holds our own academy at the Training Center located at 725 NW 12th Street, Moore, OK 73160.

Q: What does the Recruit Academy consist of?

A: A firefighter recruit typically completes a training program where he or she learns how to fight fires, deliver emergency medical services, and respond to hazardous materials incidents. There are many written and hands-on examinations that must be passed along with physical training. After successfully passing and graduating the academy, the new firefighter is assigned to a fire station and completes their one-year probationary period.  

Q: How many positions are available?

A: The number of positions available is determined by the staffing needs of the department.

Q: What is the work schedule?

A: Firefighters work within one of three 24-hour shifts (blue shift, green shift, red shift). Firefighters work a 24 hour shift every other day for three days over a five-day period then have four days off.

Q: Are tattoos allowed at the Moore Fire Department?

A: Members are required to completely conceal all compliant tattoos/body art while representing the MFD in the Class A or B Uniform shirt.  Members are not required to conceal compliant tattoos/body art while representing the MFD in the Class C or D Uniform shirt.

  • Tattoos/body art is strictly prohibited in the areas of the neck, head, scalp, face, ears, mouth, tongue, lips, hands, fingers, or any area of the chest or back visible in any authorized uniform or attire.
  • Tattoos/body art that is detrimental to good order, discipline, and morale of the MFD, or that are of a nature to bring discredit upon the MFD are strictly prohibited anywhere on the body.
  • Body piercing or alteration is prohibited from displaying body piercings, alterations, brands, intentional mutilations, ornamentations, intentional scarring, etc., to any area of the body that is a deviation from normal anatomical features and that is not medically required while wearing any version of an MFD uniform or while representing the MFD in any official capacity.

Starting Pay: $47,771.84

Following successful probation, firefighters are eligible for annual merit increases and COLAs to the current maximum base pay for the Firefighter rank of $79,425.
